In barely one generation we’ve moved from exulting in the time-saving devices that have so expanded our lives to trying to get away from them — often in order to make more time. The more ways we have to connect, the more many of us seem desperate to unplug.

Nothing new here but timely. Just came back from a week-long trip from Italy over the holidays where my-better-half and I spent quality time together with our 20-month old. How did we do that? We unplugged. And not entirely, however. We unplugged when we went out. Because of the extraordinary charges, I don’t turn roaming on. And without an always-on connection, we had real undistracted conversations, we had moments to take in the beauty and stillness. Simply put, we had time to think.

Don’t get me wrong. I still have my mobile on me. I need to capture some of the beauty we were sharing together.
