Mike Daisey was a self-described “worshipper in the cult of Mac.” Then he saw some photos from a new iPhone, taken by workers at the factory where it was made. Mike wondered: Who makes all my crap? He traveled to China to find out.
Daisey’s one-man show “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” has been on my radar for awhile since the paper has run a number of articles:
- On Stage and Afterward, Spotlight on Apple in China
- A Trip to China Can Make a Guy Hate His iPhone
- Moral Issues Behind iPhone and Its Makers
Of course, there was Mike Daisey’s own op/ed:
And the narrative continued recently with Apple’s initiative to produce iPhone chips in… Texas:
And late last week, a few head-turning headlines:
- Foxconn Resolves a Dispute With Some Workers in China
- Apple Lists Its Suppliers for 1st Time
- All iPhone Sales Suspended at Apple Stores in China
Nonetheless, this TAL’s episode has moved me to watch the full show while it’s in town. And I’d admit that it would be a stretch for me to say that I would never buy an Apple product again. But this piece certainly makes you think… differently.
